Hi ,
Happy Tuesday!
Emotional eating is a loaded term. Use visualization right now when I ask:"What does emotional eating mean to you?" I imagine you go to a place of inhaling a full, family-sized bag of chips when you are stressed, or a spoon and a tub of Ben andJ Jerry's when you are sad.
But what about a joyful night of snowshoeing or skiing followed by a fondue night with cheese and bread? What about a movie night with hot buttered popcorn and M&Ms?
Food is part of our lives, our celebrations, and is meant to nourish not only our bodies but our souls. Remember: There is no such thing as bad food. It's our mission to nurture a healthy relationship with food.
I can tell you clearly as a health coach to follow the science:
- If you go to a calorie deficit, through exercise and healthy eating with a focus on protein, fibre and healthy fat and lots of water, you will lose 1-2 lbs per week.
- If you lift weights you will change your metabolism and your fat-to-muscles ratio. You will also burn more calories at rest.
- If you eliminate refined sugar from your diet, you will lose weight
- If you cut out alcohol, you will lose weight.
I can also tell you that you can do anything for a short period of time.
Your emotions are part of your life - as someone who has lived through deep grief, I will tell you personally that it sucks. Those of you who have been there understand. But you are either going to feel it, or you are going to numb it.
I have done both.
When we teach ourselves to numb - with food and with alcohol, we also start numbing the joy in our lives, too.
In other words....it's never about the cookie or the bag of chips.
I want you to learn to love your comfort foods. And make a place for them. But I want you to learn to love how to live in a healthy, nourished, vibrant body too.
