Happy Monday
Did you know there are over 70 species of sunflowers? They are beautiful, and they are strong and functional. They are also useful, containing a seed that is not only healthy and delicious - feeding humans and livestock - that can also be turned into an oil that is often used in cooking, in soaps and fragrances.
What does this have to do with summer fitness?
I chose the Sunflower as the emblem for our community The Healthy Six. We are building bodies and lives that are functional, fluid and useful. If you are on holiday, and you are kayaking or walking, remember - every Goblet squat, every Thread the Needle, every sprint on the bike, every meditation, every healthy meal is building a body you want to live in.
Now, a confession: I suck at downtime
As someone with a career, a business and two kids, along with a memoir that I am writing, there is simply never a moment where I can "chill" - there is always something that either needs to be done, or can be done.
However, the research shows that downtime is essential for brain health
So, this summer, I am working on it. This weekend, I spent hours by a pool, went to the Farmer's Market without a "I have to create a recipe out of this" (although I did score Tulip Cabbage and am planning an Asian-inspired slaw for our new website!). I also went for long walks and ate late at night
And guess what? I am better for it.
This week - and really, for the next two months, my goal for you is this
- Exercise every day. I mean it. If that is a walk, it is a walk. But exercise is the single greatest tool we have in our tool box.
- Eat in season - go to the Farmer's Market. Buy the strawberries. Make the salads (listed below).
- Have the popsicle or the ice cream - it is sweet summer for two months.
- Come to class -

READ: Cancer and Exercise - behind the massive study
I love this line from the Guardian:
What struck me, and the authors, from their study is that knowledge alone – even among those who have had colon cancer and have been advised to exercise – isn’t enough to shift activity levels. Structure, supervision and social contact matter. Being told to “move more” is easy. Actually changing your habits – especially after cancer treatment – is hard. That transition requires coaching, encouragement, and the support and time to build confidence.
