A Tale of 2 Businesses

One has a simple offer

The other is customized for each client

One can close a new client with a few sales emails

The other needs 3 or more sales calls, a presentation, a negotiation, and a project plan to close a client.

One gets paid every day

The other, every month

One has barely any fixed expenses

The other is built on fixed expenses

One interacts with it’s customers once or twice a week

The other talks their clients off a cliff multiple times a day

One of these businesses sounds fun to run.

The other sounds like a headache.

This little poetic endeavor was inspired by two things.

  1. A Tale of 2 Cities by Charles Dickinson (Never read it)
  2. My partners and my two businesses.

But it’s not about my business. It’s about millions of businesses everywhere.

How is it that one of these businesses is way less maintenance than the other?

We could probably do a much deeper analysis, but the simple reason is:

One business researched a problem of a customer segment, created a simple solution, and sold THAT product.

The other business is built around a particular skillset, and lets each new prospect interaction determine how to apply that skill set.

Take from that what you will.

An announcement for you all! - Other than my newly found poetic talents.

I have had a lot of fun building this newsletter, and have had a lot of conversations with you all about how it is landing.

Based on those conversations, and my own long-term goals, I've decided to drop the Dropout brand.

The only difference this will make is that everything will come from my own personal brand.

We will still talk about

  • Starting online businesses
  • Growth marketing
  • Entrepreneurship
  • and learning.

I hope that you all love this evolution.

And I would love to hear your thoughts!
