Happy Friday,

Maybe the greatest fear athletes (and other performers) have is of disappointing important others like coaches, family and teammates. I have two solutions below.

And if I can help you with your performance anxiety, get in touch with me here.

Don't Disappoint!

Of course you don’t want let your teammates down!

And of course you are anxious about it. Let’s be honest. If you make a mistake you will hurt yourself and them as well. They will handle it, I’m sure, but they will be disappointed.

Don’t let this worry cause you to make mistakes or play cautiously.

This anxiety has just told you that you care very much about not disappointing them … so do everything in your power to avoid this!

Channel that nervous energy into greater focus and effort on what you are doing.

Rather than worry about letting them down, do everything in your power to play well and make them proud.

In this way you turn your anxiety into motivation. Turn the threat into an opportunity and challenge.

Will They Forgive You?

Sometimes we don’t want disappoint teammates for fear of how they will react.

We are afraid:

😡 they will be mad at us

👎 they will think we suck

🏀 they won’t pass us the ball

🫤 they won’t trust us

We are afraid we will lose their friendship.

But how do you respond to your teammates mistakes?

My guess is that you forgive them. You know they are doing their best. The mistake was honest and in good effort. We are all out here learning. You support them, encourage them and bring them up when they are down because you love them and that’s what good teammates do.

Teammates are family. You forgive their mistakes.

So if you do disappoint them with an honest mistake, won’t they forgive you too?

If you’d like to overcome your performance anxiety, reply to this e-mail and let's work together.
