Speaking!
I’m thankful for the opportunities to speak this week.
Thank you to Colonial Athletic Association for inviting me to address attendees at their Colonial Athletic Association Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Leadership Summit. One big takeaway in each area of mental toughness (the value of worry and how to act on values independent of anxiety), mental health (improving sleep is the number one best strategy), and mental illness (strength is in seeking help).
It was great to be in a full room of talented PTs and ATs at The Center for Physical Rehabilitation who want to help their injured athletes get better by addressing the mental side. Their passion for your clients was evident and I enjoyed the interactions as they sought to identify when athletes are in distress and how to best refer.
Highlights included how to bring psychology into rehab sessions. We reviewed the May 2022 data from the NCAA Student-Athlete Well-Being Survey and found that feeling overwhelmed and having sleep difficulties remains high. Mental health issues among college student-athletes continue to be 1.5-2x higher than pre-COVID. I look forward to partnering with them in the healing of our West Michigan athletes.
Can I educate your group about athlete mental health and wellness?
