Why you should "doubt your doubt"
Jul 28, 2023 11:16 am
Hi,
We spend too much time fighting with our negative thoughts. This includes unjustified fear, doubt and insecurity.
Some negative thoughts we need to pay attention to. Some appropriately warn us of danger.
If, for example, I am worried about making a mistake in a game, that is a good warning prompting me to focus in on the play.
But too often we worry simply because we care.
I really want to win, so I worry about losing.
I really don't want to make a mistake, do I doubt my ability.
I really don't want to let teammates down, so I fear missing the shot and pass the ball.
Much of this worry is often ๐ป๐ผ๐ justified because I am prepared and the risks I am taking are a part of sport. The doubt is a distraction.
Worry about losing is a distraction from what I need to do to win.
Doubting my ability ignores the training I have done (and is a distraction).
Fear of making a mistake makes sense, they happen and do hurt but focusing on them ... is just another distraction.
Your mind has one job: to warn you of danger. This is an important job, so you can't ignore it and "just think positively" as you may have been told.

Embrace the negative thoughts and fears. Hold them lightly and consider "is this warning helpful?"
If so, respond to it and do something productive.
If not, then doubt the validity and usefulness of your insecurity and refocus on ๐ชhat's ๐mportant ๐กow to perform your very best.
