Hello,

The purpose of anxiety is to act like a red flag and get your attention.

When your mind worries, it is warning you about all the things that could go wrong during a competition.

Not what WILL go wrong, just what COULD.

The best response is have a plan for each of those scenarios. Take each worry and identify how you will address it if it happens.

For example,

- if equipment breaks, where will you get another?

- if you are losing, what will you focus on to get back in the game?

- if you get a cramp, how will you relieve it or run through it?

- if you make a mistake, how will you respond to the emotion and focus on the next play?

Be sure these game plans are very specific and tell you exactly what to do with your mind and body. Be sure these behaviors are under your control.

You'll find that having a game plan not only prepares you for the adversities, but also reduces your anxiety.
