Hello,
Of course you are worried before a competition. You want to win. You don't want to make a mistake and disappoint yourself, coaches or teammates.
So what is the very best way to do that?
Ask yourself, "how can I best prepare myself in this moment?"
The answer should be a behavior that is under your control and relevant to your immediate performance.
For example:
... warming up and stretching
... imagery to rehearse your strategy or technique
... listen to music or talk with teammates to get in the ideal mood
You will find that by focusing on your preparation and taking action, not only to you improve your chance of success, but you will also lessen the anxiety.

I'm excited to present this advanced ACT workshop to colleagues at the Association for Applied Sport Psychology Conference in the Fall 2023.
The Human Rehabilitation Framework:
- is the first bio/psycho/social process-based approach to rehabilitation that is accessible by all disciplines for delivering care to treat the athlete as a whole person, not just biologically or psychologically.
- embraces the scientific philosophy of Functional Contextualism, which is adhered to comprehensively throughout the HRF™ in order to ensure a coherent approach to clinical reasoning, decision-making, scientific research, intervention, and outcome measures.
- de-emphasizes diagnoses and emphasizes the unique presentation of the individual.
Protocols following syndromes and diagnoses are replaced by a process-based approach for evaluation and intervention. This means that rather than follow a generic protocol based on diagnosis, individual nuance is prioritized recognizing that every athlete is different and this impacts the intervention of every session and rehab appointment.
Reductionist clinical thinking is replaced by adaptive strategies for embracing complexity. (A fancy way of saying all torn ACLs are not the same. We expect
there to be differences and look at all the factors across disciplines that may be influencing the healing process.)
In short, this is an exciting way to help sports medicine teams improve their outcomes with injured athletes. Can't wait to share!
And if I can help you return to sport with confidence after your injury, reach out and let's work together to make that happen.
