Hello
Can you believe summer is right around the corner? We are almost mid-2021?!? Is your year going like you wanted? Did you rebound from 2020 like you hoped?
Listen to my "Mid-Year Reset" interview on The Sports project below.
Then I've got an important message regarding your ability to respond and take control of your future; and a warning about burnout.
Have a fantastic weekend,
Dr Eddie
Mid-Year Reset
I spoke with The Sports Project Radio, checking in on your goals for 2021 and how to restart them if you’ve slipped.
Learn how deadlines can both help and hurt your long term progress, the importance of specificity, and why you want to master the art of starting.
I elaborated on my recent Facebook posts about perfectionism and self-talk. Why are we so hard on ourselves? And how does self-compassion increase your performance? Practice talking to yourself as you would a friend.
Find out how athletes maintain their motivation by shifting from outcome goals to their identity as an athlete.
The interview ends with a unique Mental Toughness in 60 Seconds, specific for The Sports Project, on why the pursuit of happiness may be holding you back on your goals for 2021, and what to do instead.

You Are Response-Able
Obstacle:
Something goes wrong. You blame others or the situation. This protects your ego but you miss the opportunity to accept responsibility and make better choices to improve.
How to Overcome:
Be response-able. You have an ability to respond. You have a choice to lean into the difficulty, accept the negative consequences of your actions, and make adjustments. Or you could just feel better and avoid the truth … for a little while anyway. But that will keep you stuck. Can you make the choice to own what you did, then respond in a way that moves you in the direction you want to go?

Burnout & The Need for Recovery
Obstacle:
Burnout. In sport it develops in three uniquely different stages than other settings. It typically starts with exhaustion and leads to the second stage of reduced accomplishments. As an athlete, these poor results affect us emotionally leading to the final stage of devaluation (significant loss of interest in your sport). Avoidance of the sport follows for relief of the stress and can lead to exit.
How to Overcome:
Treatment of burnout is very difficult, so prevention is best. Prioritize rest and recovery, particularly 8-9 hours of sleep, good nutrition and hydration, and appropriate training breaks.
