Ask yourself, "is it really worth it?"
Feb 02, 2023 4:21 pm
Hello,
Steve Project of the Sports Project Radio Show had me on to discuss the concept of becoming the Perfect Perfectionist. If you've enjoyed my previous posts about this, you'll love the elaboration I share with him (and the exercise we do on air)!
And then I continue the series on anxiety at the next level and ask .. "is it worth it?
Enjoy,
Dr. Eddie

I join host Steve Project on The Sports Project Radio Show and detail the steps you need to overcome the struggles of perfectionism.
Learn:
- The negative consequences of perfectionism
- Why telling your athletes “mistakes are OK” makes it worse!
- How to accept mistakes as an important part of improving
- How to “notice” the distress and take action with the frustration
- Why positive thinking can make you more negative

Anxiety is a useful emotion. It warns us of danger. And anxiety about your ability to make it at the next level is justified.
Rather than trying to relax or build your confidence, you need to listen to this warning.
Success at the next level requires you to prepare at a much higher level than what you've previously done.
This means more time, effort, energy and attention. It may mean more sacrifices in your social life and/or down time. You can't live like your peers (e.g., other college students). You have to live differently to support your athletic dreams.
Anxiety brings your attention to this, and you have to ask yourself, "is it worth it?"
If it is, then willingly make the difficult choices in service of those dreams.
If it isn't, then your anxiety is warning you about the real possibility of failure and you have to decide if staying at this level is really where you want to be.
It is your life. You get to choose how you live it, so there isn't a right or wrong choice here.
But it isn't fair to you to expect the higher level outcome without putting in the higher level work too.
Anxiety at the next level ... is it worth it?
