Hi

Hope your weekend is off to a great start.

This week I have two special videos about commitment. The first will help you get off the fence and pick a side. So often we have competing motivations. But that prevents us from moving in the direction we want to go.

And the second encourages you to realize what commitment actually means. It isn't dependent on our feelings, and we don't change our mind. We commit. No. Matter. What.

Enjoy!

Get Off The Fence!

Another obstacle to commitment. You do want to do that thing … and you don’t want to do it. You have all these reasons why it would be good for you and you “should” do that thing … and a whole bunch of reasons why it’s hard and uncomfortable and and you don’t feel like doing it. You do and don’t want to. You’re stuck in the middle.

How do you overcome that fence you’re sitting on? Because you do have to get off it and pick a side.

Two things. And the first is realizing that you do have to pick a side. And by not picking, you’re picking the not doing. So hold yourself accountable to the power of choice and know that not choosing is choosing.

But choose intentionally. List out all those reasons why you do want to do it. All the benefits and rewards. Richly imagine how amazing it would feel to do that thing and enjoying the results. But don’t stop there. This is where we make the mistake. We think this one-sided story is supposed to motivate us and it doesn’t!

Look at what it is going to cost you. The time, energy, fatigue and discomfort. The risk of failure and embarrassment. Enduring the mistakes and failures along the way. And ask yourself two questions: 1) Can I handle it if these bad things happen? and 2) Is it worth it?

If it isn’t, then get off the fence and choose not to commit and feel good about it. But do that intentionally.

And if it IS worth it, well then you’ve made a decision to commit with the willingness to endure what you must in order to be successful.

Commitment Means No. Matter. What.

Obstacle:

You feel strong commitment at the beginning of your season, project or goal … but then the feeling fades. It gets harder to follow through on the necessary behaviors it takes to succeed. You question if you want to finish. You don’t feel the same attachment to your goal as you once did, and your lack of intensity and consistency shows this.

How to Overcome:

Understand that your commitment is a behavior that you will execute regardless of how you feel. It is ultimately your ability to follow through when you don’t feel motivated that will determine your success. This is why I would take a committed athlete over the motivated athlete every day of the week. What motivation is low, a committed athlete will train and perform with the same intensity required to he his/her best.
