Life during a pandemic has given me lots of time to consume media. I'm reading more, playing more games, and watching more Netflix. Recently, one of my favorite childhood TV series got a reboot. I have to admit, I'm loving me some new Unsolved Mysteries.
I used to watch this religiously from the 4th grade on. The 80s were something else.
You might wonder what this has to do with writing urban fantasy, but as I kid, I could have cared less about the true crime aspect. I lived for the ghost stories and UFO sightings. I wanted to believe in something crazy out there, much larger than my rural Idaho life. I lived for that "crawl under the covers" feeling before going to bed. The legendary host Robert Stack and the show's theme song only added to the ambiance.
They picked a real head-scratcher of a murder mystery for the reboot's first episode. There's a probable simple explanation, but with so many weird details you wonder how they possibly can’t add up to a more sinister conclusion. I can't help but empathize with the families involved, wanting closure for them. And because it's a real-life cliffhanger, I hope against the astronomical odds that someone out there does hold the key to solving a mystery.
