Hi
Question (and this is from a reader/fiction perspective).
Should ones desire for revenge have an expiration date?
We've all heard or read stories about a person that has been wronged in some way and desire to get his or her revenge if its the last thing they do.
A man deeply in love with a woman, wanting to marry her only to find out she was cheating on him the entire time with someone close to them.
Or even more vile. A woman on her way to sign papers for her first home purchase gets pulled over by the police. The officer searches her car and find drugs and a weapon that was used in the murder of her sister years prior. None of these items were hers and she don't know how they got there. In turn, she looses her job, looses her chance at buying her home and spend a year in jail fighting the charges. She eventually is found innocent but the damage is done. 15 years later, she finds out who planted those items in her car that day, and who murdered her sister.
The person in the above situations vow to get revenge, but how long is too long to get that revenge? In the first situation, The man is determined but doesn't get his shot until 20 years later. He meets the sister of the woman he once loved randomly. The sister had never met him but he knew who she was. This is his chance, he can seduce her and get his revenge... but will it matter? Would he actually get revenge on the woman he loved or just hurt another innocent woman who he had seduced into falling in love with him?
The second situation, the person has a lot more dire reason to get revenge. Not only was her life ruined, she knows who killed her sister. There is probably no expiration date on that kind of revenge, but the first situation... a 5 year expiration date? would it even be that long?
If it gets to the point where the person that wronged someone don't even remember the situation... does the need for revenge expire? What if the person that wronged someone isn't the same person anymore? The woman that cheated on the man later decided to be a better person and stop mistreating people. She changed, fell in love, got married, had kids. 20 years later, when what she did to the man was a distant memory, the man comes seeking revenge. Is that need for revenge still legitimate?
Enough about my rambling... Just an example of things I think about when I'm trying to develop a story.
Hope you enjoyed.
