Hi Guys.
I wanted to talk to you guys about something I have been thinking about lately.
Lets say you are reading a book, watching a TV show or movie. The main character of that story, the one you are supposed to be rooting for, the one who's corner you are supposed to be in... You find that you don't like that person.
Can you still like the overall story?
What made me think about this was my recent read... well listen of the new book by Peter Cline... Ready Player Two.
Now I read the first book, saw the movie, loved them both. but in the second book, I had a lot of problems with Wade Watts, the main character of the series. I actually got to a point where I had to just sit down with myself and say I don't like this guy anymore.
But
I still liked the book, I still had fun with the book and listened to the end.
I was trying to think if I ever had that feeling with any other story property. There are some stories, where the main character is an unlikable character but in a lot of the cases I thought of, that was the point of the character... TV shows like The Shield, Breaking bad. movies like Training Day... They all had main character that were despicable, unlikable characters but in those situations, that is the point and the fact that they were despicable and unlike-able added to the story.
In the case of Ready Player Two, I think the goal was to give Wade Watts "flaws". If you do any reading about things you should do as an author to make your characters feel more real, it is always suggested to give that character flaws, don't make them perfect. I believe that is what happened in this book but those flaws completely turned me off of the character all together.
But
I still liked the book.
