The Friday Four—1/8/2021

Hi friend!
Here's your forever-free email I send at 7 am every Friday.
Each week, I send you something cool you can watch, read, use, and listen to.
If you dig it, or if you have any suggestions, reach out to me and let me know. I’d love to hear your thoughts.
If you hate it, cancel anytime. If you hate me, cancel me anytime.
Here's something for you to...
1) watch.
The Greatest Showman | "From Now On" with Hugh Jackman
If you need a pick-me-up.
2) read.
100 Tips for a Better Life
We've all seen hundreds of these kinds of lists before. Here's one that doesn't suck.
A few of my favorites:
#43. Deficiencies do not make you special. The older you get, the more your inability to cook will be a red flag for people.
#48. Keep your identity small. “I’m not the kind of person who does things like that” is not an explanation, it’s a trap. It prevents nerds from working out and men from dancing.
#92. You have vanishingly little political influence and every thought you spend on politics will probably come to nothing. Consider building things instead, or at least going for a walk.
3) use.
The Eisenhower Matrix
A simple and surprisingly helpful tool to help you prioritize to-dos and manage your time.
The matrix (or box) is sectioned into four quadrants:
Q1. Important and urgent
Q2. Important but not urgent
Q3. Not important but urgent
Q4. Not important or urgent
Knowing which tasks belong in which quadrants has been incredibly helpful to me as I try to spend more time in Q2.
4) listen to.
A Few Thoughts for a New Year
Episode 229 of Making Sense with Sam Harris.
A short podcast with refreshing ideas about moving forward in this country: Politics, compassion, action, and more.
“Our society appears to have shattered itself into competing cults: The cult of Trumpism—with it’s especially crazy core of QAnon…and the cult of Wokeness—with its crazy core of critical race theory. I’m not saying these problems are precisely the same or necessarily proportional. But they are the same in being constituted almost entirely by propaganda…to a degree that should only be possible in dystopian fiction.”
Listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Quotes.
“The professional keeps his eye on the doughnut and not on the hole. He reminds himself it’s better to be in the arena getting stomped by the bull, than to be up in the stands or out in there parking lot”
-Steven Pressfield
"It was important, Dumbledore said, to fight, and fight again, and keep fighting, for only then could evil be kept at bay, thought never quite eradicated...."
-JK Rowling
“It’s just sometimes you’re not down to contemplate your own existence.”
-Andrew Phillips
