Reminder: The Friday Four—Merry Christmas!

Dec 28, 2020 11:05 pm

Hi friend!

Here's your forever-free email I send at 7 am every Friday.

Each week, I send you something cool you can watch, read, use, and listen to.

If you dig it, or if you have any suggestions, reach out to me and let me know. I’d love to hear your thoughts.

If you hate it, cancel anytime. If you hate me, cancel me anytime.

Here's something for you to...

1) watch.

My Octopus Teacher

image

A stunningly beautiful Netflix documentary about a man who befriends an octopus.

Try to watch it without crying. I dare you.

2) read.

Do What You're Doing

image

A short blog on the euphoria of being totally present in whatever you're doing:

Cleaning, writing, conversing, running...

"Do what you’re doing sounds trite. But it draws your attention to the self-defeating inner resistance that often underlies challenging tasks.

Sometimes I catch myself dragging my feet during workouts, dawdling before the next set. Reminding myself to Do what I’m doing reveals the absurdity of my approach: trying not to work out while I’m working out."

3) use.

The Odyssey Plan

image

An Odyssey Plan is a "brainstorm of how your life might work going forward 5-10 years."

Here are the 3 steps:

  1. Write out what your life will look like 5 years from now if you go down your current path.
  2. Write out what your life will look like 5 years from now if you take a completely different path.
  3. Write out what your life will look like 5 years from now if money and societal obligations are not a factor.

4) listen to.

Schulz Saves America

image

A hilarious and refreshing Netflix mini-series by comedian, Andrew Schulz.

Andrew dodges laser beams as he criticizes the left and the right on all of the major political and social events in 2020.

"We're hearing from the loudest 10% of assholes on the left. We're hearing from the loudest 10% of assholes on the right. Meanwhile, the other 80% of us are just trying to figure out what the fuck is going on."

Extras.

Favorite blogs.

So you like art, huh? (How to do fulfilling work)

My response to the question:

"What do you plan on doing with that degree?"

I'm liking these image-styled blogs. What do you guys think?

So you wanna be a rockstar?

What I learned from being in a punk rock band in high school.

Bonus!

As 2020 comes to a close, I'd like to take 10 seconds and say thank you to all of you.

In one of the most chaotic and confusing years in my lifetime, I feel immense gratitude for anyone who has allowed me their attention and support. I love writing blogs and newsletters, but having super cool people like you opening them up and reading them makes it that much easier to sit down to create the next one.

Friends, relatives, acquaintances, strangers...thank you. ☺️

Have a lovely Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Quotes.

“That’s what makes death so hard...unsatisfied curiosity.”

-Beryl Markham

“The more freedom we’re given to express ourselves, the more we want to be free of having to deal with anyone who may disagree with us or upset us. The more exposed we are to opposing viewpoints, the more we seem to get upset that those other viewpoints exist. The easier and more problem-free our lives become, the more we seem to feel entitled for them to get even better.”

-Mark Manson

“Greatness is not a function of circumstance. Greatness, it turns out, is largely a matter of conscious choice.”

-James Collins

Thank you as always for the support, friends! If you enjoyed this newsletter, I encourage you to forward it or invite your friends to subscribe. I hope you all are happy and healthy!

Much love.
