November Freebies and a Personal Update

Nov 07, 2025 4:55 pm

Hi, everyone, and welcome to new subscribers. I’m halfway through my twelve-week regimen of chemo and immunotherapy treatments, and staying active with writing and exercising (some days are better than others). I’ve experienced a few side effects, which I’ve written more about in my blog. If you’re interested, please check it out through the link in my signature line below.

I answered the door to happy trick-or-treaters on Halloween. The rain turned into a drizzle by the halfway point, and my granddaughters were delighted to be trick-or-treating. This was my youngest granddaughter’s first Halloween and she managed it like a pro.

For new subscribers and those who haven’t picked up the second book in my Casey Holland mystery series, I’m offering Deadly Accusations for $.99. This story has Casey dealing with the aftermath of life-changing events that occurred in book one. Here’s a short blurb:

A coworker’s murder triggers accusations and suspicion among security officer Casey Holland’s workmates. Her job turns into a nightmare when the company’s president pressures her to find answers. Shunned and threatened at work, Casey must also deal with traumatic, life-changing events at home and the horrific realization that one of her friends could be a killer. “A well-crafted book with lots of teasers”.- Nightreader

WHAT I’VE BEEN READING

As long-term subscribers know, I love to read different genres, and the Harry Dresden series featuring professional wizard Harry Dresden is an entertaining blend of mystery, fantasy, adventure, thriller, and humour. I’ve just finished the fourth installment, Summer Knight, which has Harry barely functioning in the aftermath of events that took place in book three ten months earlier. But when frogs start dropping from the sky (a bad omen) he can’t afford to ignore the world any longer. Sure enough, the White Council is putting Harry on trial for misdeeds and giving him a slim chance to redeem himself. Meanwhile, the winter court’s devious faerie queen has hired him to find out who killed the Summer Knight and stole his power, as she’s being blamed for it. On top of this, his old girlfriend, Elaine, who he thought was dead, is very much alive. She has her own agenda for wanting to see him. Needless to say, there’s a lot going on in this book, which makes for page-turning escapist fiction.

WHAT I’VE BEEN WATCHING

Have any of you been watching Maigret on Masterpiece? The stories are inspired by the terrific Paris-based mysteries by Georges Simenon. Simenon was a prolific novelist whose stories have been made into movies and TV productions for years. This version is modernized, which means Maigret has access to cellphones and other tools that the earlier versions do not. The stories are compelling, although I found it strange that all the actors have British accents in a Parisian police department. I’m used to it now and am really enjoying the series, which is only six episodes long. If you’ve missed it, hopefully the series will be replayed. It’s worth watching as the essence of Maigret is much like that of Simenon’s original version, as I recall. I haven’t read one of his books in many years, but I’m now inspired to go back and read more of them.

That’s it for now, so until next month. Happy reading and viewing.
