As indicated in my last newsletter, The Blade Man explores some of the anger and/or mental health issues bus drivers face every day. Although I wasn’t the most experienced security guard at the campus where I worked, I was older, so some coworkers, including supervisors, occasionally sought my input on certain situations. Take the Sunday morning when I was working in the communications office and my supervisor requested help with a hysterical senior citizen.
The campus had a zero-tolerance policy when it came to people coming on campus to collect discarded cans and pop bottles. Despite this policy, a few regulars showed up. One of them was a woman who appeared to be in her seventies and who spoke no English. That morning, after my supervisor asked her to leave, she threw herself down onto the ground and started screaming and thrashing about. The students who were awakened by the screams yelled at her to shut up, but she kept going.
Shocked and worried, my twenty-something supervisor radioed me to ask what he should do. Since this was more of a behavioral rather than a medical issue, my advice was to let her wind down but stay nearby to make sure she didn’t hurt herself. I also suggested that maybe he should let her have the bottles, as it wasn’t worth the battle. He agreed and, sure enough, once he gave her space, she stopped, tossed the bag of bottles over her back and marched off.
Common sense and life experience are two valuable commodities in the security business. These are traits Casey Holland struggles with at times, but with each book she learns a little more. In fact, she learns a great deal in The Blade Man.
