Sizzling Weather and Sizzling Giveaways

Summer’s well underway here in the Vancouver area with temperatures soaring as high as 42 degrees Celsius (100+ degrees Fahrenheit) earlier this week. Mercifully, it’s cooled down this first day of July, but summer’s only beginning. For me, this means chilling out with some great reads!
BookFunnel’s latest offering of free mystery, suspense and thriller novels starts today and goes until August 31st. Nearly 70 authors are taking part, so there are plenty of great reads to choose from HERE.
Now, here’s a couple of fun facts: I’m a hockey fan who loves the Vancouver Canucks, although things didn’t go well for the team this year. The Canucks have never won a Stanley Cup, but they came close ten years ago on June 15, 2011. It was game 7 in Vancouver against the Boston Bruins and there’d been an enormous buildup in the city.
Fans didn’t take the Canucks’ loss well and begin throwing tantrums in the streets. Drunken anger escalated into a violent mob who burned cars and looted stores. People were hurt. It wasn’t our city’s finest moment, but the following day volunteers arrived to start cleaning up. No one asked them to. They just did it.
That riot inspired the opening for my sixth Casey Holland mystery (released in February 2020) The Blade Man, but my fictional riot takes place in Coquitlam, BC, a municipality about thirty minutes east of Vancouver. This riot has nothing to do with hockey, but it does speak to mob mentality and a sudden loss of safety one can feel when caught in a volatile situation.
