Books Spared in Purging of Rocks and Records; Paperback Giveaway

November 8, 2023

Maybe it's the cold weather forcing me back inside the house, or a procrastination tool to keep me away from my laptop, but I've been bitten by an organizing bug lately.

It started with the delivery of a new bedroom rug last week. My son's old bedroom needed a major re-do and I finally got around to painting it last year. Then for reasons that I still can't put my finger on, the freshly painted room became a repository for rock samples, tubs of my husband's summer field gear, and boxes of old vinyl records my mother-in-law bought at an estate sale for our son. These records I literally can't even move without emptying the boxes halfway; they're the old, old records for playing on a Victrola (we have a standing one and our son loves it).

Anyway, finding space around the house for the accumulation of stuff in this room I'm prepping for the holidays has been a challenge. Luckily, we have an enormous walk-up attic where stuff can disappear if not labeled. It has become its own museum of discarded and forgotten objects from our lives. Now the trick is to get this stuff up two flights of stairs without my hubby knowing his field gear has been relegated to the Attic Room of Doom. The rocks will return to the Great Outdoors where they belong. And the hundred-year-old records? Now that our son has his own home with a partially empty attic, the cycle can start all over again with a new generation.

The paperback copies of That Woman on Thistledown Lane finally arrived. I have one left after sending them out to Bookstagrammers and organizing a giveaway in my Facebook reader group. My cute little Port Chance stickers came last week too, so one lucky winner will get a signed paperback, a Port Chance sticker, another custom-designed sticker and my reading list bookmark.

TO WIN: Just reply to this email by Thursday evening 11/9/23 at 7 p.m. (CST) with an "I'm In!" or something to that effect. I'll choose one random winner that night and contact you through your email. The winner will also be announced in the next newsletter. I'm so sorry, non-U.S. friends, the cost to mail this internationally would be prohibitive.

"Janie and Mark's story was swoon worthy and bittersweet, and I loved getting to follow alongside their complicated history, and the many hilarious matchmakers who are determined to see them back together. I especially enjoyed Janie's close relationship with her family, and I wholeheartedly am crossing my fingers that one of two of her sisters will end up with a story of their own down the road...My first visit to Port Chance was both charming and idyllic, and I hope I'll have many more chances to visit in the future. If you're a fan of heartwarming and clean contemporaries, then this just might be the title you're going to want to go ahead and pick up." - Goodreads review

I love this recent review from an Amazon reader. Waking up to another positive review really starts my day in the most positive of ways. Even after publishing fifteen books, it still boggles my mind that people other than my friends and family read my books and take the time to leave such encouraging feedback.

I've started reading a book called Locally Laid, a funny memoir by a woman whose husband surprised her one day by proclaiming he'd like to start a commercial egg farm after he was let go from his hospital grant-writing position. It's witty and entertaining; I'm really enjoying it. We had chickens when I was growing up which kept my sister and I busy with feeding, cleaning their coop, and collecting eggs. My sister has a small flock now in her suburban neighborhood, and I've often thought about getting a few hens again but we travel so much that I've never been able to justify the time or expense. Maybe someday.
