Our local zoo's newsletter popped into my inbox last week with a call for an animal sculpture contest using recycled materials in honor of Earth Day. So I tried to explain the concept of a contest to my soon-to-be four year old granddaughter which sent us down the rabbit hole with more questions. The contest is for kids after all, a minor detail. I am what the rules identify as a "team member" which translates to I Get To Help, and I am so on board!
"What's a sculpture?" she asked. I showed her a ceramic fish on our mantle.
"What will we make? she asked.
I countered with asking her what animal she liked best at the zoo.
"A flamingo!" she answered without missing a beat. "But I don't know how to make a flamingo."
So I Googled flamingos on my phone and we spent ten minutes looking over the anatomy of flamingos, from their black beaks down to their three-toed webbed feet. By the time she grew bored of looking at pink birds, we had a game plan.
Craft projects were my thing when the kids were young. Girls scouts, Sunday school, and the after school program had me neck-deep in pipe cleaners, felt, pom poms and glue⏤I still have a trunk filled with craft supplies which has now been resurrected since the grandgirls came along. The other day when she visited we started painting white card stock pink. Then we cut them into feather shapes. So we have pink paper feathers now, sooo many feathers. Tomorrow we'll work on painting the laundry detergent bottle pink. She loves painting. And I'll work a little magic with the duct tape and the cardboard tubes. Stay tuned...

In book news, I'm updating the cover of Love Between the Lines, the Sweet & Swoony romance which will become Love, Lies and Literature this next week. Revisions are almost finished. The story will go back to the editor at the end of next month since I've added new content. Then I'll be back to working on the first book in a new series. I hope to share a little more about that in May with you.

What am I reading this week? Other Birds by Sarah Addison Allen. I love magic realism with a little romance and intrigue sprinkled in and this novel has it in spades! Main character Zoey revisits the eclectic hotel her late mother occupied, hoping to understand the painful childhood memories she's harbored for years. She doesn't expect the strange mix of residents making the hotel their home or the persistent flock of blue birds called dellawisps (also the name of the hotel) who seem to make the comings and goings of everyone their business.
