I’d just settled at the dining room table last night with a stack of bills to pay and a partially written note to you all (in my head) when blip! the lights went out. 

Nothing can compare to the winter five years ago when we were without electricity for three days in January. Or the winter after that when our boiler died and we were without heat for five days during the coldest stretch (single digits!) that season. A notice from Ameren popped up on my phone an hour later noting that power was estimated to be restored around 11 p.m. Wonderful! So I found a battery-powered lantern, then wrote most of this letter and did the bills with the help of the LED glow next to me. I can adapt, for a short while anyway, with alternate light sources and my parka.

Amidst the turkey baking and holiday shopping over the last seven days, I’ve been working with dozens of other authors to bring you some festively bookish events over the next month.
