Have you heard of a "smash cake?"
This is new to me in celebrating birthdays with littles. Celebrations with my kids involved one cake cut into slices and eaten with forks. No second cake as a photo op. If our kids wanted to destroy their cake slice, they could. We took photos. We laughed. And one wet towel and a few baby wipes took care of the clean-up.
But yesterday I ordered a "smash cake" for our granddaughter's birthday party this weekend. If you're still in the dark about what this involves, there's no need for alarm. No injuries are involved! The grandgirl will sit in her high chair and this darling little cake will be at her mercy. Picture frosting on her fingers, in her hair, smeared across her face (if she decides to take a taste), and around the vicinity of the high chair, all while cameras and iPhones capture the messy moment. I'll share the milestone and decimation of said cake next week...
In books news, we're only weeks away from The Blueberry Point seasonal collection releasing! I thought I'd share a little about the second story included in the set today. Many of you have already read LOVE, LIES and FIREFLIES, either as the freebie gift when you signed up for this newsletter or purchased it separately on Amazon or elsewhere, but I included it in the collection because it fits the seasonal theme, having taken place in summer. In case you haven't downloaded it yet, here's the link again.
The story follows Farra Hall, a free-wheeling (literally!⏤she lives out of her travel trailer) who visits the almost-opened Blueberry Point Lodge during the "test-run" weekend, and Trey Merrick, the inn's gardener. They'd met previously at a wedding and Farra thought they'd hit it off. But then he didn't call.
I was able to draw a little from my experience as a journalist and my love for gardening while writing this story. And the moon garden at Blueberry Point Lodge that Trey designed was the perfect backdrop for the budding romance between him and Farra:
Trey pulled into the gravel drive of Blueberry Point Lodge for the second time that day while reciting the flowers he’d planted.
Artemisia…snow-in-summer…Lamb’s ears…hydrangea…
The garden was a sight when the moon was full, the light illuminating the white blooms and foliage. His favorite had to be the ostentatious moonflowers. Big as saucers. They didn’t like the cold Minnesota springs though, so he’d wait to plant them during the next few weeks. Darcy and Sean’s guests were in luck this weekend. The moon wasn’t quite full, but there was enough so the garden could put on a proper show for everyone. He fully intended to give Farra a personal tour.
Fun news: I'm working on a proposal scene for this story as an extra bonus for readers. A link is coming soon! Also, stay tuned for the pre-order link to the seasonal Blueberry Point Collection next week.
