We survived!
The big move from Wyoming to Iowa is behind us, and my son started his new job on Tuesday. The week wasn't without its challenges though. The biggest test was getting a call from U-Haul 48 hours before we were scheduled to pick it up last Friday.
We won't have your truck for you, the woman said over speaker phone when my son answered.
My son told her we'd make do with any size. We'd have three vehicles in our caravan after all. Surely we'd be able to fit his 2 bedroom apartment into a smaller truck plus two other pick-ups.
No, we don't have any trucks, she answered. Period.
How can a moving company not have a truck for us, especially after my son diligently reserved it back in early June? I asked.
At least you're not moving from California, she said with a chuckle. They don't have a single truck for rent in the entire state.
This was supposed to make us feel better, but it didn't. Jack needed to be out of the apartment on Saturday morning. Where would we find another rental truck in a state where everything was few and far between?
Then she told us there was a truck 2 1/2 hours away in Glenrock. She could reserve it for us. She'd even knock off the cost of gas for us bringing it back to town.
So we were up at 5:30 a.m. Friday morning to make the five-hour round trip to pick up the truck when the feed store doors opened at nine. Only the opening hours on the website were different than the hours (11 a.m.) posted on the door. Another hour passed while Jack called the owner and arranged for someone to meet us there. Keys finally in hand, we booked it back to Laramie to start the packing process. Thankfully, the rest of the day and the two-day drive to Iowa was without complications - whew!
Needless to say, next to no writing happened last week. I always get a little itchy when I can't get at least something down after a few days. Maybe I wrote 250 words, but that might be stretching it.
In the last newsletter I shared the cover and book blurb of my forthcoming book in the all-new Port Chance series. Within the pages, you'll find a new small town filled with all the endearing, quirky characters you've grown used to when reading my books.
Beginning today, I'll be posting First Look Fridays in my Facebook group, giving sneak peaks at the characters, scenes, and doing book-related giveaways. Join the fun! https://www.facebook.com/groups/dmbks
