Yesterday I was outside doing some yard work before the heat settled in. The grass is starting to turn brittle from lack of rain, but that also means the lawnmower can sit idle a little longer if I want to look on the bright side. Anyway, the ever-present creeping Charlie and burdock give me fits, and I'm not a fan of using chemicals so that means a lot of weed pulling. I have the PictureThis app on my phone for when I run across something I can't identify. I'll snap a photo of the leaf and this hand-dandy app tells me all about it.
There were clusters of sprouts scattered around the garden that caught my eye because they were two-leafed and chartreuse green. At first I thought they were sunflowers popping up from the bird feeder I relocated, because they looked familiar. But no, the app told me they were all zinnias - my favorite flower! I'm guessing the only way they ended up there was from me scattering seeds two years ago from a bunch of seed heads I'd saved. There are so many! The bees and butterflies will be thrilled!
I love happy accidents like that, especially in the garden. Book characters can surprise me too when I veer away from my outline.
