Hey ,
I want to share something that stayed with me from a book I’m currently reading, This Is Marketing by Seth Godin.
He made a simple statement, but it carries a lot of weight:
Never assume everyone is like you.
Never assume people think the way you think.
Never assume people know what you know.
Never assume people want what you want.
This sounds obvious, but many of us live as if it’s not true.
One of the biggest mistakes people make in relationships, work, leadership, and even service is projecting their own mindset onto others.
You assume people are rational because you try to be rational.
You assume people will respond logically because you would.
You assume people will value what you value because it matters to you.
But the truth is this:
Human beings are not primarily rational.
We are emotional.
We decide emotionally and justify logically.
Once you understand this, a lot of confusion clears up.
You stop being shocked when people act differently.
You stop being offended when people don’t respond the way you would.
You stop expecting people to behave based on your own internal rules.
This awareness alone can preserve relationships.
It can also preserve your sanity.
My dad used to say something when teaching me how to drive in Lagos. He said, “When you’re driving, assume everyone else on the road is mad except you.”
Not because everyone truly is mad.
But because that mindset makes you more cautious, more alert, and more prepared.
You don’t drive assuming everyone will follow the rules.
You drive aware that someone can swerve suddenly, without signal, without warning.
That awareness keeps you safe.
Life works the same way.
Never assume people will act the way you would act.
Never assume people will communicate the way you communicate.
Never assume people will value things the way you value them.
Just because something makes sense to you doesn’t mean it will make sense to someone else.
Just because you want something doesn’t mean another person wants it.
Just because you see things clearly doesn’t mean others do.
This is why many conflicts happen.
This is why many expectations fail.
This is why many people get disappointed.
A good example is relationships and love.
People talk about love languages for a reason.
One person might feel loved through quality time.
Another feels loved through gifts.
The mistake many people make is speaking their own love language instead of their partner’s.
You give what you would want, not what the other person needs.
That gap creates frustration.
The lesson here is not that you are special or unique.
That’s not the point.
The point is this:
Do not use your own mentality as the standard for everyone else.
Learn to understand people.
Learn to observe patterns.
Learn to ask questions.
Learn to adjust expectations.
This mindset will help you relate better.
It will help you communicate better.
It will help you lead better.
It will help you stay calm in situations that would normally drain you.
This year, carry this consciousness with you:
Everyone is different.
Everyone processes differently.
Everyone responds differently.
And that’s okay.
Understanding this will make your life lighter, not harder.
Your Fave,
Darasimi.
