🫣 What's your worst wardrobe decision?

Have you ever made a very bad wardrobe decision, ?

I don't get out often and have never much cared if I was dressed "properly" for an occasion—I was a punk rocker back in the early 80s, with a horrifying permed Mohawk haircut for a hot minute and the overall look of a street urchin—so when I was invited to my university best friend's very formal wedding, I had no idea what to wear.

I asked my mom, who back in the day was quite fashion savvy, to help me find an appropriate dress ... with two caveats—

  • It had to be from a thrift shop
  • It couldn't be boring

I wish I had a photo of that shiny monstrosity!

On the positive side, the cut was good and looked fine on my body and it fit perfectly after Mom adjusted it (since she's kick-ass with a sewing machine and had been making clothes for decades ... which makes me wonder why she didn't simply whip me up a little something special ... ).

But in truth ... It was too shimmery, too leafy-patterned, and much too greenish-silverish. Think gaudy upholstery and you'll be in the right row of the 1950s fabric store.

In any event, I had no idea I'd be seated at the bride and groom's table at dinner ... I mean, that was truly unexpected. Which meant me and my entirely out of place dress were the center of attention, much to my BFF's wife's horror, I'm sure.

Book covers are like picking the right dress

You want to make a statement, but you don't want people to stare at you and wonder, "What was she thinking?"

And that, it seems, is what happened with the cover I created for The Billionaire's Shrubbery. I adore it. I think it's brilliant and fun and is a perfect complement to the story of plant whisperer Virginia and billionaire motivational speaker Will.

But ...

... the majority of potential readers were definitely wondering "What is this madness?" more than exclaiming, "What a fabulous cover!" and quick clicking to grab a copy.

What do you think of the new cover?

Which one would you rather have as a date at your fancy dinner table?
