So I've got this book about a woman whose childhood wish to find a wizard comes true fifteen years late. It's entirely from her perspective, which is what the story required.
But it turns out that writing from wizard Alexander Hartgrave's perspective as Emily Daggett turns his life upside down is a lot of fun.
When you're done with The Opposite of Magic, you can grab that story and two others in the free "Contrariwise" book. If you read "Contrariwise" a while ago, you'll recognize the first two stories. But this last one about Hartgrave meeting (and falling for) a particularly inconvenient co-worker is all new.
It features a scene with their colleague Bernie Ballantine in which Ballantine is revealed to be as much a connoisseur of romance novels as Emily Daggett is of fantasy books:
He turned to look at Ballantine and caught him waggling his eyebrows at him. Hartgrave’s stomach gave a funny zip. “What? No.”
“Opposites attract …”
“For the love of God.”
“Enemies to lovers …”
“No, just—” Hartgrave threw up his hands. “You’ve got to stop applying romance-novel logic to the real world.” He’d seen the man’s collection. It was alarmingly large.
“You pick fights with her,” Ballantine said, now waggling his finger instead of his eyebrows.
“I do not!”
“You strongly implied today that her field is bunk.”
“Well, it is. I haven’t found anything in old books about magic that appears to be true.”
Ballantine’s smile said I’m right and you’re wrong.
. . .

New book alert:
I'm a sucker for S.L. Prater's steamy steampunk books, and her latest is a unique twist on the Beauty and the Beast fairy tale. I got my hot hands on an advance copy and am so enjoying it.
Here's the gist:
"Before the summer ends, I’m going to ask you to marry me,” the beast said. “And you won’t say no …"
Fiona is ready to spend her holiday having fun, but her father has other plans. Worried that his witch daughter has become too reckless after suffering a loss, he bargains her off to serve as assistant to Dr. Elias Van Doorn.
Cursed by a demon to take on the form of a beast, the famous doctor works in seclusion. Fiona should be frightened by his horns and his size. She shouldn’t find his aggravation so delightful or the swish of his tail so captivating or his arrogant mouth so alluring. An irresistible bond begins to form between them, but as she surrenders to her primal desire, she resists giving up her heart. Grief, it seems, is the greater curse.
In just one summer can the clever beast tame this beauty and claim his fated mate?
