One of my favorite relatives likes to think of life as a movie. You know: "Oh, they'd totally be playing 'Welcome to the Jungle' in the soundtrack right now."
A soundtrack would be darn helpful sometimes. If it started to sound ominous, you'd know to turn around and get the heck out of wherever you were.
But what would be even more helpful is if we knew the genre we were in at a particular stage of our life.
How many times have we realized a character is making the wrong (or right) choice not because it would be obvious in all situations but for the simple reason that there are Rules and Expectations for certain kinds of stories?
I mean, if you walk into your kitchen and find a gorgeous stranger who tells you that you're destined to save the world and must come with them, the right decision then and at every step thereafter has everything to do with whether you're in a fantasy, a rom com or a psychological thriller.
(If a gorgeous stranger ever appears in your kitchen and tells you that, listen very carefully for ominous music.)
In the book I'm relaunching later this month with a snazzy new cover, the main character is very aware of fantasy-genre conventions. Emily Daggett devoured those novels as a kid. And when she stumbles on a wizard at the college where she teaches, she is absolutely primed to check all the fantasy boxes and get the adventure she always wanted.
But life is never that easy, is it?
Especially if you think you're in a fantasy but it's actually a fantasy romance. π
I'm looking forward to sharing the relaunched book with you! Should be out very soon.
If you could pick the genre for your life, what would it be?

Want fantasy romance that's free to snaffle up? Find several dozen here, from the woman who needs instruction on how not to be an inadvertent angel of death (as one does) to an artist who discovers the frog she's pet-sitting is actually a Regency prince.
You made it to the end! You're awesome. (Of course.) And oh hey, here are my latest books.
