The Poppy Fields by Nikki Erlick: What if there were a cure for grief?
Welcome to the Poppy Fields, where there's hope for even the most battered hearts to heal.
Here, in a remote stretch of the California desert, lies an experimental and controversial treatment center that allows those suffering from the heartache of loss to sleep through their pain...and keep on sleeping. After patients awaken from this prolonged state of slumber, they will finally be healed. But only if they're willing to accept the potential shadowy side effects.
On a journey to this mystical destination are four very different strangers and one little dog: Ava, a book illustrator; Ray, a fireman; Sasha, an occupational therapist; Sky, a free spirit; and a friendly pup named PJ. As they attempt to make their way from the Midwest all the way to the Poppy Fields-where they hope to find Ellis, its brilliant, enigmatic founder-each of their past secrets and mysterious motivations threaten to derail their voyage.
A high-concept speculative novel about heartache, hope, and human resilience, The Poppy Fields poses the question: How far are we willing to go in order to be healed?

Homeschool Hangout is a group homeschool families that meet monthly with one of our librarians. Sometimes, we take a field trip to a local organization/business for tours or programs. Other months, we might have a homeschool-exclusive event for families to participate in. To stay in the loop, join the email list by emailing Brianna at [email protected].
In October, take a hike through the State Park and learn about some of the animals and plants that are native to North Iowa. Bring binoculars if you'd like to search for migrating birds! Before starting at the library, Brianna was a Naturalist and has a M.S. In Wildlife Science. Bring those questions and let's see what we can discover together!

The Cold Vanish by Jon Billman: These are the stories that defy conventional logic. The proverbial vanished without a trace incidences, which happen a lot more (and a lot closer to your backyard) than almost anyone thinks. These are the missing whose situations are the hardest on loved ones left behind. The cases that are an embarrassment for park superintendents, rangers and law enforcement charged with Search & Rescue. The ones that baffle the volunteers who comb the mountains, woods and badlands. The stories that should give you pause every time you venture outdoors.
