Writing Updates

Joel and I actually managed to crawl out of bed for the Easter service at sunrise on Sunday, held outside the city walls on the banks of the Isar. Freia came with us, but Master Denlinger chose to sleep in and attend the main service at the cathedral later that day. While I appreciated the cathedral with its organ and stained glass windows, I favored celebrating the resurrection outside in the realm of nature, feeling the chill of the spring morning, the dew dampening my hair, whispering to my ice.

Quite a few people from the city arose early for the occasion, I noticed, as Joel, Freia, and I settled down upon a blanket on the grass. Several members of the Catholic clergy, Paulus and the bishop included, stood at the head of the group with the river at their backs. I saw several noblewomen I recognized, and Freia pointed out Eva and Kathe, two of Master Denlinger’s sisters. She waved at them, beckoning them to join us. They sat down on the edges of our blanket soon afterward, engaging Freia in conversation while I continued to study the others in the crowd.

As the service commenced, the bishop recited Latin from the Bible. “Do you think we’ll actually get to sing some Easter songs?” Joel whispered to me.

“I doubt it,” I murmured back. “All the ones we know haven’t been written yet. Maybe we’ll sing a chant in Latin, but I probably won’t recognize it.”

Joel sighed, leaning back on his hands and muttering, “I guess I should have studied Latin in high school instead of Spanish.”
