, I once read somewhere that the ancient Roman generals always had a servant who followed them about.

The job of this servant was to shout: “Memento Mori” which means:

“Remember you must die”

It's said that this was to remind the generals that they shouldn't let the power they had get in their heads…

That they should be kind and just…

And also that they should do their work with diligence because soon they will be no more and the only thing to represent them would be the work they had done when they were alive.

Crazy because I just re-read Steve Jobs' Biography by Walter Isaacson a few months back…

And Jobs said something related.

Jobs said that thinking about his cancer pushed him to work hard on making Apple great because he felt he didn't have long to live.

Eerie but true when you think about it.

Well, for me, I've been applying my own form of Memento Mori.

I can't afford servants that follow me around to remind me of my surely and inevitable death…

But I have my dad's bronze figurines placed on my work table to remind me.

And each time I look at them…

They fuel me to live a life that will leave a legacy in the minds and hearts of anyone who comes across me.

Because the truth is:

You must die!

I must die!

We all must die!

And having this at the forefront of your mind rids you of the fear of underperforming…

It helps you get rid of procrastination…

It allows you to appreciate the little things you have…

It guides you to live a life of meaning…

And that's why I created this letter for you.

This letter is a memento mori gift from me to you.

Let it fuel you…

Let it drive you…

Let it make you grateful…

Let it calm you…

If it does any of this, then it has done its work.
