Why I practice boxing

Nov 05, 2024 10:52 am

, many people have asked me why I practice boxing although it's a dangerous game...

So I thought I'd address it in today's letter

Let me tell you what I mean.

In the process of boxing, I have:

  • Torn the flesh beside my right eye
  • Gotten a red eye that lasted 3 weeks
  • Sprained my neck (I'm still feeling this)
  • Dislocated my left and right shoulder successively
  • Sprained my jaw (couldn't chew food well for 2 days)

And despite these, I still keep showing up for boxing training and sparring sessions almost daily.

So I understand why they ask me why I still box.

Now whenever I get asked this question…

My reply is always simple.

I'm a man, and a man should have the capacity to be dangerous.

You see , the truth in life is:

Someone gentle because they cannot be dangerous is not a good person.

Because that's the only option the person has.

But someone gentle even though they can be dangerous is a good person…

Because the person has the option to be a troublemaker but chooses to be gentle instead.

It's the choice that makes the person good.

So , boxing makes me dangerous…

I could strike a full-grown adult man and have him on the ground with just one punch

But that doesn't mean I should become a troublemaker…

It doesn't mean I just fight anyone who confronts me.

My knowledge of boxing has made me much calmer…

And if you look at most men who can be dangerous…

Often, they're usually the most peaceful people in the room.

It's usually those who cannot be dangerous that make a lot of noise.

As the saying goes:

“Empty vessels make the loudest noise”

Also, beyond just being dangerous…

Boxing has taught me grit…

Resilience…

Persistence…

Consistency…

Endurance…

And strength of character…

Because boxing is the only game where you can't cheat yourself.

You don't have teammates to blame or rely on.

In the ring, you're the only one who decides your fate.

It's so much like the game of life we're all playing.

Only you have the power to decide your destiny.

So , if you're reading this, and want to learn a new sport …

Consider learning boxing too.
