A Writing Practice for Your Business

"I joined Writing Practice to get the discipline, direction, feedback, and structure I needed to do more consistent writing for my business. I've written more in one month than the last six! It's great to get others' perspectives on my writing and to give meaningful feedback on the pieces they are developing. I love this community!"
~ Janet Anderson, Cultivate Your Potential
Well, hello, !
November is National Novel Writing Month. This annual event started in 1999, and challenges participants to write 50,000 words of a novel in 30 days. Today, the event is organized by NaNoWriMo, a nonprofit organization that offers structure, community, and encouragement to fiction writers.
I've participated in National Novel Writing Month a few times over the years. One thing I like is their unapologetic focus on quantity over quality. Because the only way to write 50,000 words in 30 days is to embrace the shitty first draft.
But the frenetic pace left me with no time to think.
And so, I started going on writing retreats with a small group of fellow fiction writers, all of whom are working on a novel. Twice a year, we rent a big old farmhouse and spend a long weekend writing, walking, cooking, and eating together. At the end of the weekend, we read our work aloud.
I love the structure of these retreats.
I love being in community with other writers. I love the energy of being in a house with people writing in every room. I love the conversations we have about the craft, the structure, and sticky plot points we can't untangle ourselves. I love the rhythm of the thing.
Writing in community is a vastly different experience from writing by yourself.
Two years ago, I started a writing community for graduates of my Pathway to Publication program. Every month, we come together for a writing workshop, focused deep work session, and peer editing workshop. I started this community to provide additional structure and support for writing and publishing articles.
Earlier this year, Amy Vasterling asked if I would ever create a similar community for business writers who hadn't been through my signature program. I decided to run an experiment, and quickly realized that these workshops work well for anyone working on a business-related writing project.
Writing Practice was born!

"[T]he key to being a better writer is, essentially to be a more productive one. Or more simply, the key to being a better writer is to write."

Questions + Answers
Is this community just for writing articles for publication?
No. Writing Practice is for professionals who who want structured support and focused time to complete at least one business-related writing project each month. Projects may include articles, blog posts, newsletters, social media posts, white papers, ebooks, case studies, landing pages, book chapters, presentations, educational materials, or anything else related to your business.
I don't think of myself as a writer. Will this community work for me?
Yes. The only requirement is a desire to share your ideas, demonstrate your expertise, and expand your influence through the written word. Writing Practice will give you structured support and focused time to develop materials you are proud to share. Writing is a practice. The more you write, the more you will develop your voice, improve your craft, and build your confidence as a writer.
When does the Writing Practice community meet?
While our schedule will vary to accommodate holidays, sabbaticals, and vacations, workshops are typically held on the first and third Thursday of the month while deep work sessions are held on the second Friday. Shorter writing and editing exercises are held most Mondays. Meetings begin at noon Eastern.
Do I have to attend all of the gatherings each month?
Not at all! You can drop in to whichever sessions serve you best and fit into your schedule each month. One benefit of an ongoing membership is that if you miss a session you wanted to attend this month, we'll be doing it again next month.
How much does it cost?
Membership is $100 per month, and you can cancel anytime.
What if I need to cancel my membership?
Membership auto-renews each month, but you can cancel anytime. I use Stripe to process membership payments. When you join, I'll send you a link to Stripe's customer portal so you can manage your membership and payment details. I want you to be a member of Writing Practice only so long as it serves you.
Ready to sign up? We'll be meeting Thursday, November 7 for our next Inspired Writing Workshop!
I'll see you in a couple of weeks. Oh, and the article I'll be sharing with you then? Well, I wrote, rewrote, and edited it in community with members of Writing Practice!
In the meantime, if you have any questions about the Writing Practice community or other ways we might work together, or if you'd just like us to get to know one another better, please book a call. I'd love to learn more about your business goals and how I might be of service.
Take good care,
