#506 – How can you keep your inner peace no matter what?

We've all been there: the moment you've been waiting for so long finally arrives, and it's a flop––I feel I'm there all the time.

The problem, as you may intuit, isn't the moment itself; it's the expectations you'd built around it.

Last night, I discovered the mantra that effectively shuts down the chatter in my mind robbing me of my peace––and sleep. Some noises in the kitchen awoke me in the middle of the night: my son was eating at night. Again! Why wasn't he sleeping? Why wasn't he matching my idea of what a "perfect" son should be?

Thankfully, my mindfulness training seemed to kick in (all those Tara Brach talks, Anne Lamott books, Michael Singer podcasts) and the mantra "It's all exactly how it's supposed to be" came to me.

I can't tell you what else happened because I fell asleep––obvious sign that the mantra worked.

If everything's always exactly how it's supposed to be, then you don't need to fight any part of reality, because it's all part of whatever "plan" may be laid out for you. You may not know where you are in the plan, but the plan does.

You may not know why some things are happening, but that's okay; everything's something you needed to learn, a path you needed to tread.

So, even when it's uncomfortable, rough, scary, exasperating, or sad, you might as well relax into the experience, knowing that it's here for you.

What expectations can you drop so you never lose your peace?

Love,

Carolina
