#514 – What do you bring into the new year?

People say that what you do New Year's Day sets the tone for the entire year.

Of course, being me, I thought it was all about "doing." So yesterday, the last day of the last year, I thought about when, how, and what I'd write. Would I have time and space? Would I "feel like it?"

This morning, after the first night of sound sleep in weeks, I just felt like relaxing. I took my time de-seeding a pomegranate, I made a fruit salad (with grapes cut in half), and sat down with my husband in front of a large cup of black coffee.

After breakfast, we went for a long walk along the ocean. We made ourselves a latte when we came back, and sat at the kitchen table, just chatting.

We talked about the relocation and the difficulty we're facing finding housing; the brutal weather in our future city; the logistics of the move.

And during all that time, no Ghosts or Ego in sight. I intellectually understood the challenges we'll have to overcome, but I didn't feel any stress or fear.

Reflecting on my 55 previous New Year's Days, I realized that sadness and terror had always accompanied me. A sort of "what if" mixed with "if only" that made me at once wary and disappointed.

But not this year. This year, today, I choose to be at peace.

Now I get it: the saying isn't about doing. It's about how you are, your attitude. My attitude today, the lens I choose to see life through, sets the course for how I'll face my life all year round.

At peace: that's how I want to be this year. From there, I can do whatever I feel like––because it'll come from being, not from needing to prove I'm worthy.

What attitude will support the life you want in the new year?

Love,

Carolina
