{{contact.first_name}} How do you like your YA Fantasy?

YA Fantasy is a broad category

image

When I first decided to write fantasy, I had no idea what the traditional publishers looked for in books. I had a brother-in-law that published a YA Fantasy book and loved the pace of YA vs Epic Fantasy. I like my adventures to keep moving. I loved the Harry Potter series, but some of the later books seemed to slow down, mired in teenage angst. I could see it creating tension for the characters, but for me, it was too laborious. I loved the action, the magic, the creatures.

When I set out writing, I wanted to throw Agnes, my heroine, into new worlds, different kinds of magic, creatures that were both traditional (like dragons, I love dragons) and new, and magical worlds. I've also loved science and couldn't leave it out. So Agnes became a smart teen with an ability to stand firmly on science and magical ground.

Of course, she is very new to magic. And no one on her earth could train her. She had to set out on adventures to learn and grow her magic.

Now, I'm going to be honest with you. Romance isn't something that comes naturally to me. And the idea of sweet teenage, slow-burn romance appealed to me. I wanted to create stories similar to Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, The Chronicles of Narnia, where teens faced inner (and outer) demons that many teens face today, without putting them into situations that would embarrass me and other like-minded moms.

Could a story be great without the steamy romance? I believed it could. And here we have an award-winning series that hits that niche.

So, what do you like in your Fantasy books? Is there room for high-paced adventure without steamy romance?

And happy holidays, however you choose to celebrate!

Supporting other authors

Here are some giveaways and sales that I have entered to promote my books. Just a word of caution... I have not read these and cannot vouch for content. While I try and swap with clean ya fantasy authors, there are all kinds of genres and heat levels that you'll have to decide for yourself.

i was very fond of first earth. HOWEVER, chapter 19 and chapter 20 had the same text. although they had different titles (facing generals in my pajamas (20) and Mom in denial (19). the titles differ, but the text in these chapters is the same. So I didn't get chapter 20 AT ALL.so i totally missed the lead in to the huge battle. i though you might want to know. i.e. the kindle content is defective... for that chapter...

I am so sorry for that... we discovered that after having applied an update to the file there had been an inadvertent copy and paste error by my editor. We scrambled to replace the file on Amazon and they supposedly pushed an update out. But some readers didn't seem to get the update. Please email me directly at camimurdockjensen@gmail.com and I'd be happy to help get this fixed. -Cami
