Today, July 24th, is Great Master Chang Ren’s Enlightenment Day. The Venerable Master Hsuan Hua knew and respected Great Master Chang Ren, who was primarily known for his dedicated acts of filial respect, direct and unwavering truthfulness, and sincerity in cultivation.

In the Biography of Great Master Chang Ren, Master Hua takes anecdotes that Master Chang Ren expressed to him once and animatedly turns Master Chang Ren’s inconceivable, spiritual accomplishments and occurrences into applicable lessons for the everyday practitioner to ponder.

The following excerpt recounts the moment Filial Son Wang, later known as Master Chang Ren, faces a test in his practice of mourning by his parents’ graves, cornered by a pair of wolves who were ready to eat him:

When the two wolves rested their paws on his shoulders, you can imagine how the Master felt. Put yourselves in his place and think about it. At that moment I believe he had no false thoughts, only fear. He was terrified but free of any false thought. He would not have been thinking, “What am I going to eat tomorrow?” Or, “How is my family now?”

From Chapter Two, “Enduring Many Tests at the Gravesite”
