Gravity vs. Drag: Are your separators sized correctly? ⚖️

Learn how droplet size and terminal velocity determine separation efficiency

Hi

Separators are one of the most critical equipment within a process plant. That's why the understanding of separation concepts is highly important to ensure a proper vessel sizing.

Whether we are dealing with gas-liquid, or liquid-liquid separation, the fundamental physics always boil down to a battle of forces: Gravity vs. Drag. This results in a very important and common criterion that is used in vessel sizing, which is droplet size.

The specification of the droplet size to be separated is a critical factor in sizing the separator. But what is the droplet size? And how does it affect the sizing of the vessel?

I’ve put together two brand-new videos breaking down the exact concepts you need to know for both vertical and horizontal separators. Check them out below:

🎬 Video 1: Separator Sizing Criteria: K factor and Droplet size

👉 Watch Video 1 Here

🎬 Video 2: How Horizontal Separation Works: Gas-Liquid & Liquid-Liquid Separation Concepts

👉 Watch Video 2 Here

Whether you are sizing a new vessel from scratch or troubleshooting an existing one, these fundamental concepts will give you the framework you need to get it right.

I hope you shall enjoy the videos and let me know what you think in the YouTube comments!

Have a nice weekend!
