Process simulation plays a pivotal role in shaping the success of a project. This is because every small portion of the plant is designed based on the data we get from process simulation.
When we carry out pipe sizing, the sizing is based on flow rate and physical properties of the fluid. When we perform exchanger thermal design through software like HTRI or EDR, the exchanger duty, inlet and outlet pressures and temperatures, heating and cooling curves are the main data we rely on to reach a proper exchanger design. Same for tower sizing, which is based on vapor and liquid loads in a tower, vessel sizing based on liquid and vapor flow rates and physical properties, PSV sizing, and so on.
All these data are based on process simulation output. So it's not just about how to use HYSYS or PROII and get the software GREEN CONVERGED message. We should carry out an optimized simulation that matches our requirements, the actual situation and given site data.
In my article and latest YouTube video "Process simulation: Its Role, Inputs and Outputs", I have gone through the importance of the data given to the simulation model. One of the key factors to consider in process simulation is the input data. Accurate feed composition, product specifications, available utilities, and ambient conditions are essential for developing a reliable and optimized process model. Incorporating these factors ensures that your plant design is in harmony with the actual data and available resources, ultimately leading to reduced fixed and operating costs.
There are even other important factors, such as product specifications, available utilities and ambient conditions. I have also talked about how the simulation output shall affect the workflow of a project and the downstream plant design activities, you can check this even in more details.
However, there is even much deeper level where I talked about how process simulation affects different process design activities. In my recent course, "Process Design Engineering, Equipment Sizing and Safety Masterclass", I have shed the light with several examples on how the process simulation is affected by the input data and gave an example of how a process design basis looks like.
In addition, I have also shown different examples on how the optimization of a process simulation should be carried out to deliver a proper process design. I have also shown how different sizing activities are affected with the data they received from Hysys output.
