Enhance Your PSV Knowledge: Understanding Blowdown

Check our new article: 4 Key Factors Affecting PSV Sizing & Operation

Dear ,

We've talked before about how important Pressure Safety Valves (PSVs) are in keeping our chemical process engineering operations safe. Today, we're going to focus on a crucial part of PSV operation - Blowdown.

Blowdown is a technical term that describes the pressure difference between the PSV set pressure and when it closes. It's like a pressure range that affects how the PSV behaves during and after an overpressure event. Considering the appropriate blowdown is crucial to prevent the PSV from cycling too quickly, which can lead to damage.

According to ASME Section VIII, the standard blowdown is 7% of the set pressure, and for ASME Section I, it's around 4%. The specific value depends on the type of system the PSV is protecting. For pilot-operated valves, a narrower blowdown of about 3% is needed to avoid interfering with normal pressure.
