Operational considerations in a P&ID

How should we ease maintenance for the operator in our P&IDs?

Hello

When designing a P&ID, we should put ourselves in the shoes of the operator.


This can be done through these example questions:

  1. How shall the operator know if the equipment is performing well or not?
  2. When taking the system out of service, how shall the operator isolate the system from the plant safely and smoothly?
  3. After isolating the system, how shall he get rid of the trapped liquid or gas in order to start maintenance activities?
  4. During maintenance activities, what are the connections needed in order to ensure easy maintenance?


In addition, a P&ID is expected to show systems that are not usually shown on a PFD. This is because these systems are not used during normal operations, but they are mainly used during maintenance or emergency situations. These can be:

  1. The closed drain system
  2. The open drain system
  3. And the relief system
