Early days & hello!

How do you feel about the early days of something new? It can easily go either way...

Early days!

I LOVE early days. It's fun to do something new, and I trust myself to do it reasonably well. I can give myself a break on quality, because it's new. I get to LEARN like a sponge - you never learn faster than your first few days doing something you're excited to do.

They're scary, too… early days are scary! If there's potential for harm, it's likely to happen early, before you know how to stop it from happening. You can waste a lot of energy going down wrong paths. You don't want to trumpet that you're a beginner, but if you don't you won't get the benefit of the doubt. You might suck at this.

(hey, notice how the positive things are "I", and the negative things are "you"? Not intentional… thanks for making it so obvious when you're making me doubt myself, inner scold! Does your brain split yourself up like that?)

I have no idea how you feel about them. It can easily go either way...

+ exciting newness!

- every chance to mess it up

+ all the possibility!

- all the pressure

+ beginner's luck!

- start the way you go on - so you better start right...

+ you're just a beginner! low expectations!

- you've succeeded at [something else in your life] so that's your new standard...

None of these statements are right or wrong - they're all thoughts.

Which way do you usually go?

It might feel responsible to be tough on yourself. Reasonable, adult. Hold yourself to a standard of excellence. Nothing wrong with that - but does it help you get things done?

For me, it doesn't usually help me get things going. Not to get started! Not in the early days or early stages.

It's common in writing advice - a "shitty first draft" that you can then polish. But it's applicable everywhere.

Can you identify what you're most likely to think when starting something new? And be ready for it?
