Make a tune, build a pattern, explore real research

Three free ways to turn curiosity into something you can try.

Here are three free discoveries for a little experimenting this week. Pick whichever catches your attention.

Make a tiny tune

Chrome Music Lab offers hands-on music experiments, including Song Maker. Try making a short pattern, then change just one part and listen again. Which version do you prefer? No account is required. You'll need a compatible browser and sound turned on; if an experiment won't load, try a current version of Chrome.

See a fraction instead of just reading it

Polypad is a free mathematical playground with movable tools such as fraction bars. Try lining up two halves beside one whole, then look for another combination of pieces with the same length. Basic exploration requires no login or installation. Saving or classroom features can have separate account steps.

Find a research question you could help answer

Zooniverse connects volunteers with research projects involving images, recordings and historical records. Browse a subject you enjoy and read one project's tutorial. Before submitting anything, ask: "What exactly are the researchers asking me to notice?" Projects and available tasks change. Review the chosen project before using it with children, and check its participation requirements. An account is needed for features such as generating a volunteer certificate.

These are suggestions for exploring, not assignments to finish. One interesting question is a perfectly good result.

Which would you choose: music, patterns, or research? Reply and let us know.
