This is a bit different than my usual email updates

Dear reader,
I know this is a little different from my usual emails, but I want to take a moment to be real with you guys. I hope you'll humor me.
As a high school teacher, I've had the great honor of getting to know some truly incredible kids over my career. It's been such a joy to watch them graduate, start families, and go on to live their dreams. But, with heartbreak equal to that joy, it has been tough watching some of my other students struggle and quit.
You see, as a teacher, I get to know my kiddos when they're teenagers, still filled to the brim with hopes and dreams for their lives to come. And, as we old folks know, life has a way of beating those dreams out of you. My message to you today is what I always say to them:
Please don't give up.
I don't know what your dream is, but I do know that it's important. I don't know where you've been or what you've done with your life, but I do know you can still make that dream happen. Sometimes you just need a cheerleader.
Since middle school, I'd always dreamed of being an author. I first started drafting story ideas in a spiral notebook in the back of class. I wrote 100K words of a first draft that all had to be thrown away. I completely rewrote that draft but then threw it away again. I wrote a totally different book, which is still adrift in the digital doldrums of my laptop, that will likely never see the light of day. I had friends and family member say really mean, really true things about my books.
But I didn't give up.
I've almost given up on writing more times than I can count but, thanks to my wife the motivation fairy, I stuck with it. Despite so many setbacks and so much discouragement, I somehow kept at it. And you know what? It was worth. I promise you it's worth it.
Just don't give up.
