Is the end the most important part of a story?

Dear reader,

The longer I write stories, the more I realize that each individual aspect of writing is its own unique skill. Talent in world-building doesn't transfer to talent in writing dialogue. Good plotting doesn't equal good prose.

And writing a good beginning doesn't mean you'll write a good ending.

Beginning a book is all about catching your reader's interest, but ending a book? That's something else entirely. You've got to tie up all the loose ends, fulfill all your promises, and prove to your reader that the time they invested in your story wasn't wasted.

That can be tough.

But, though as it is, it's critical. In fact, I've heard people argue that the end is the single most important part of any story. And I might actually agree with that. I've loved plenty of slow books with awesome endings, but I'm not sure I've ever loved a book, no matter how fantastic 90% of it was, that had a disappointing ending. For some reason it just undoes all the magic...

But what do you think? Does a bad ending always ruin an otherwise good book? What have been the best and worst endings you've read? Shoot me an email with your thoughts!
