Dear reader,
My wife and I finally started watching Rings of Power, which is pretty neat. It's certainly not at the same tier as the original Lord of the Rings movies, but it's definitely worth a watch.
Anyway, as I was watching, I started noticing a few tropes and concepts that really stood out to me. They made me think of a trend I've been seeing in fantasy for a while, and I wonder if you've noticed it too.
Most fantasy takes place in a world that's been around a while: crumbling ruins, fallen empires, songs of the great kings and ancient heroes of the past, etc... But recently I've been seeing more and more fantasy stories taking place IN that fabled past: adventures taking place DURING those ancient ages of legend.
Is it just me, or have you seen it too?
For example, The Rings of Power takes place way back in the second age of Middle Earth, back when everything felt a bit more mystical. Ethereal, perhaps. HBO seems to be doing something similar with House of the Dragon. I also recently played a video game called Elden Ring which very much feels like you are walking amongst the ancient gods and watching them lay the cornerstones of creation. And a few years back, Neil Gaiman published his retelling of Norse mythology which rocketed to the top of fantasy best selling lists.
So... is there something to this? Does this show a shift in the zeitgeist? Is this the emergence of a new genre? Maybe "Primordial Fantasy" or something of the like? Shoot me an email and let me know what you think, or if you have any recommendations of other books/shows/games that fit this trend.
And now, on to the FREE REVIEW BOOKS!
