What kinds of books will our kids read?

Dear reader,
I'm currently sitting in an almost-empty English classroom. School is in session, and I have a lesson prepared, but less than a third of the normal number of kids are here. The rooms are barren. The hallways silent. Ghost town.
You see, we all got an email late Sunday night saying there was a possible threat reported against the school. Naturally, most parents kept their kids home today, and there are three police cars parked outside the main office. But you know the craziest part?
No one is fazed.
And when I say no one, I mean no one. Staff, students, administrators, cops: this has become a fairly common occurrence. Just another Monday. And that makes me sad.
I can't help but think what school was like when I was little. A threat against a school would have been traumatizing. Parents would be going ballistic. Kids would be crying. But now? Nothing.
It makes me wonder what kinds of books these kids are reading. What kinds of stories bring them comfort? What kinds of worlds do they escape into? What themes speak to their souls? Would the stories that entertained me as a child resonate with this generation?
It's questions like these that give me pause as an author. Because above all, I want my books to be a force for good in the world.
