You know what fantasy needs more of? Big stuff.

Dear reader,

Like most of you out there, I recently saw Dune: Part 2. But unlike most of you, I walked away with one, distinct, burning question on my mind...

Why the heck doesn't fantasy have more megafauna?

I mean, just think about those freaking worms for a minute! Think about their scale, their sheer immensity on the screen/page. Consider how well they're woven into the lore of the world: their connection to the spice, their role in the freman religion, their usefulness in travel and battle.

Fantasy needs to get in on that action.

Obviously I'm not saying there's no megafauna in fantasy. Tolkien had his oliphaunts, Sanderson really like big crabs, and of course there are the ever ubiquitous dragons, but I feel like there's some real missed potential here. Just imagine a fantasy world of leviathans and prehistoric mammals. Maybe I need to go write that book...

Shoot me an email, and let me know if you agree. Or, if you've got some megafauna out there I've missed, I'm always stoked to hear your recommendations.
