Hi Barn Burner,
This week I was in New York City. I visited my old neighborhood in the East Village. It certainly has changed since I've been here 4 years ago. It got me thinking. With rent falling worldwide and COVID-19 showing no signs of slowing, perhaps this is a moment in time where artists can return to great cities like New York, Paris, San Francisco. They've been priced out for too long and yet, they're the record keepers of culture.
Hemingway capture the Lost Generation of expats in Europe during the 1920s. Hunter S. Thompson documented the weirdness of the 1970s. Jay McInerney followed the hype of the 1980s. Chuck Palahniuk tracked the ennui of the 1990s. It's artists that see the rhythm and record the culture shifting. My latest article expands on this further.
This Week's Update
New articles!
- Crashing rent may bring back artists to cities - this is an expansion on Barn Burnt Down's debut story.
Recommended Reading / Listening
- Big tech's CEO's went before congress this week. Google, Amazon, Facebook, and Apple. They were called in to be grilled about anti-trust violations...but really it devolved into Senators asking how email works. A major reason for launching Barn Burnt Down was being fed up with how these companies have become the barons of information. It's worth reading about their lobbying efforts. They're playing for points.
Publication Updates
- I'm in the research stage of the next article on the nature of belief. But I am also looking at expanding more content into this private newsletter I have with the members of Barn Burnt Down. I am very excited to get working on that this week.
I hope you're doing well and have a relaxing week with good reading material.
